The FWC is holding a prescribed burn on Okeechobee Lake this week.

HENDRY COUNTY, Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the South Florida Water Authority plan to put out an established fire on the north side of Lake Okeechobee this week.

All burning activities will be reviewed and approved by the Florida Forest Service. The burn area will be in the northwest swamp and will be about 200 acres.

The FWC plans to carry out the burn in wind and weather conditions that minimize smoke from nearby towns and roads. March routes may be restricted during a fire for safety reasons.

If the prescribed burn needs to be rescheduled, it will be carried out in the near future. Environmentally prescribed burns help improve the habitat of fish, waterfowl, shorebirds, and endangered wildlife populations.
