The Fisk University gymnast team wins its historic debut in NCAA competition with three athletes from North Texas.

The team made history as the first HBCU to ever compete in NCAA gymnastics.

DALLAS. This week, the Fisk University gymnastics team went viral on social media after videos and images from the team’s debut competition in Las Vegas were posted.

The team made history as the first HBCU to ever compete in NCAA gymnastics. Last fall, HBCU in Nashville became the first women’s gymnastics team.

Of the 15 gymnasts listed on the team’s roster, three are from North Texas. Freshman Zanna Brewer graduated from Hebron High School in Dallas, Liberty Mora is a McKinney freshman who attended Plano East, and Morgan Price graduated from Coppell High School after moving to North Texas as a child.

While the news of Fisk’s debut caught the attention of sports networks and fans in particular, one moment drew even more attention. Price landed impressively in the vault, earning a whopping 9.9 points.

In her debut student performance in historic time, Price won the vault.

“When we were awarding, I knew I got a really high score, but to be honest, I thought someone got a higher score,” Price said in a written statement to the WFAA. “Winning the tournament in my first meeting was very exciting and inspiring.”

Last summer, Price shared her story with the WFAA. She accepted an offer to join the gymnastics team at the University of Arkansas and the SEC power plant, where her sister is on the team, but decided to back out so she could transfer to Fisk.

Price said she always dreamed of being a college gymnast, but she also wanted to attend HBCU. The creation of the Fisk team made both of her dreams possible.

This Friday, the team will take on the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. On Monday, they will travel to Athens, Georgia to take on Georgia, Ohio, and Rutgers.
