Texas Representative Says It’s Time for the AAPI Community to Stand Up

State Representative Jin-Woo responds to the recent controversy surrounding the AAPI community.

TEXAS, USA. State Representative Jin Woo says it’s time for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community to defend itself and speak out against outside attacks.

“I think it’s time for the community to stand up and say you can’t get past this. You can’t mock us, slander us, call us traitors and the like, because it does you good and because you think it’s funny. We’re going to stand up,” said Rep. Wu Na Inside Texas Politics.

One of the latest controversies involves Texas Congressman Lance Gooden.

Recently, a Republican questioned Congressman Judy Chu’s loyalty to the United States. Rep. Chu is the nation’s first Chinese-born Californian congresswoman, first elected in 2009.

Even the GOP chairman of the new House Committee on China condemned the comments, calling them inappropriate and inappropriate.

“For him to take such a very charged, racially motivated type of attack against a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives is just, it’s amazing and, frankly, very shocking. It’s insulting,” the Democrat told us.

“We have had the same accusations, the same stereotypes since the Japanese internment. And that’s the end result of that attitude and those kinds of thoughts.”

Wu says that even now in Texas, the AAPI community must stand up and speak out against the proposed law that would ban governments, businesses, and citizens from China and three other countries from buying land in Texas.

After initial outrage, the author of SB 147, State Senator Louis Colkhorst, R-Brenham, made changes to ensure that the ban did not apply to individuals wishing to purchase homes. And now it exempts those who are already US citizens or have dual citizenship from paying tax.

And in another dispute, it took months for the Department of Public Safety to notify victims that their information had been stolen after at least 3,000 Texas driver’s licenses were sent to a Chinese organized crime ring.

All victims are Asian.

“The fact that they found out about this at the end of last year and did not agree to inform the victims of this crime until they were pressured this week is shocking. This is very, very low,” complained Rep. Wu. “If Governor Abbot wants such incompetence to represent his interests, so be it. But we are completely unsatisfied with both the performance of Director McCraw and the way this whole situation was resolved.”
