Texas Exodus Revealed: Latest Data Unveils Popular Destinations for Thousands Seeking New Homes

Texas, the second-largest state in the U.S., has witnessed a significant outmigration rate in recent years. However, despite the exodus, Texas still holds the distinction of having the lowest outmigration rate in the country. The latest data released by the U.S. Census Bureau sheds light on where these departing Texans have chosen to relocate, with California and Florida emerging as the top destinations.

According to the migration data for 2021 and 2022, over 42,000 Texans made their way to the Golden State. Following closely behind, Florida, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Georgia also attracted a considerable number of Texas residents seeking new horizons. It is worth noting that even though tens of thousands of individuals left the state, Texas managed to maintain the lowest outmigration rate nationwide.

The top states that Texans migrated to during this period are as follows: California welcomed 42,279 individuals, Florida received 38,207 new residents, Oklahoma witnessed an influx of 26,440 Texans, Colorado attracted 25,466 individuals, and Georgia saw 23,754 new arrivals. These numbers paint a picture of the preferred destinations for those leaving the Lone Star State.

Interestingly, despite the outmigration trend, Texas continues to attract a substantial number of individuals from California, Florida, and New York. In fact, in 2022 alone, a staggering 102,442 individuals moved from California to Texas. This highlights the ongoing migration flows between highly populated states, with Texas remaining an attractive destination for many.

In contrast, California experienced the lowest rate of in-migration nationally. While the state does have a considerable number of individuals moving in, its large population base contributes to the low in-migration rate, according to the Census Bureau. The report also reveals that the District of Columbia had the highest outmigration rate, with most individuals relocating to neighboring Maryland or Virginia.

Furthermore, the Census Bureau’s findings indicate that other significant state-to-state migration flows involve people moving from highly populated neighboring states. For instance, a considerable number of individuals migrated from New York to New Jersey.
