Teenager shot to death after car theft in Minneapolis

Teenager shot to death after carjacking in Minneapolis: The teen was tragically injured while driving a stolen Kia in northern Minneapolis Friday night, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hare said.

Around 6:30 p.m., Minneapolis police officers responded to reports of a car accident near the intersection of North 40th and Dupont Avenues, followed soon after by reports of shooting nearby. Officers found a red Kia with a teenager in the driver’s seat, who had been repeatedly shot at.

Despite CPR and other attempts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly thereafter, two more teenagers returned from the scene of the collision. They were in police custody as of Friday evening, O’Hare said, though he added that no arrests had yet been made. No firearms were found at the scene, he said.

In the six minutes before the fatal shooting, another 911 reports were received of bullets fired by a moving gunman in several streets south of the alleged murder site, the chief said. Police suspect there is a connection between the shooting in the neighborhood, the fatal shooting and the traffic accident.

The murder, the second in 48 hours and the fourth since Jan. 1, ended a particularly deadly week in Minneapolis. The death also occurred about a mile north of where a man was shot dead on North Lowry Avenue Wednesday night after he reportedly tried to steal a car in the Gold Star Foods parking lot.

O’Hara also discussed the agency’s concerns regarding the rise in violent crime related to stolen Kia vehicles.

Numerous US police agencies have expressed concern over the recent surge in car thefts, which they attribute in part to how easy it is to break into some Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The social networking site TikTok is known as the “Kia Challenge”.
