Suspect in river traffic accident that killed five people was allegedly driving drunk

A 20-year-old Sacramento man has been taken into custody following a Thursday night crash that killed five people near the village of Freeport.

According to the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento, officers responded to the crash on River Road south of the Freeport neighborhood shortly before 5:30 p.m. to investigate a report that a vehicle had left the roadway and hit a tree. The crash site is south of Freeport. In total, five adults have died; among them were three females and two males.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a vehicle was stolen at the same location shortly after the collision. A witness to the car theft dialed 911 and provided the dispatcher with a description of the person who committed the crime as well as the vehicle.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to the location and were able to locate the stolen vehicle as well as the suspect, who was believed to have been in the vehicle involved in the previous collision.

Elk Grove became the center of the pursuit led by the suspect. Elk Grove Boulevard and Fire Poppy Drive were the areas where the chase finally stopped.

The defendant was taken into custody and then sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. The California Highway Patrol was able to positively identify him as Cameron Garcia, a Sacramento resident who is 28 years old.

Since then, Garcia has been arrested and placed in the Sacramento County Jail on several charges, including manslaughter while intoxicated, auto theft, driving under the influence resulting in injury or death, vehicle theft, and hit and run causing injury. or death. All of these allegations are related to the same incident. The Elk Grove Police Department will also file charges, according to the CHP.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office released the names of four victims who died in the incident. They were identified as Monte Nunn, 29, Isabelle Larae Salaz-Stevens, 19, Faith Nicole Samuel, 18, and a man named Kurvontey Swivert, 16. Nunn is from Sacramento and Salaz-Stevens is from Elk Grove. .

On Friday morning, traffic was allowed to resume on Highway 160 shortly before 6:00.
