Storm knocks down 100-foot tree and crushes car in San Francisco

A 100-foot ebony acacia tree collapsed to the ground early Tuesday morning, leaving the Subaru near the intersection of Post and Pierce Streets.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to Captain Jonathan Baxter, public relations officer. San Francisco Fire Department.

“I heard a loud crack at about 2:30 a.m.,” said E. Martinez, a neighbor who lives across the street at 9:00 p.m. Pierce and declined to give his name. “The wind was blowing like crazy.”

According to Martinez, the tree was not sealed until 6:30 am. Traffic on Post Street was reduced to one lane, orange traffic cones were installed on the roadway, and yellow warning tape was placed around a tree.

“The rain was so loud; it sounded like it was hail,” said local resident Marta Fuentealba. “He woke me up at 3am”

A constant stream of walkers walking their dogs stopped to take pictures of the huge black locust, and drivers stopped on a two-way street to capture an uprooted tree.

The Public Works Department arrived at the scene at 11:20 a.m. to remove the tree, which workers estimated would take several hours.

Given the large number of incident reports throughout the city due to recent stormsthe San Francisco Fire Department referred the case to the Department of Public Works after the roadway was cleared and no casualties were found.
