South Carolina deputies shot and killed a barricaded suspect after he repeatedly hit a police dog

South Carolina sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man after he stabbed to death a police dog during a house raid, authorities said.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the Spartanburg home on Thursday to serve an arrest warrant. The situation, however, quickly escalated, and the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Darius L.J. Holcomb locked himself in the bedroom and threatened officials with a knife, according to a Spartanburg County sheriff’s corporal. John Burgess.

The family was evicted from their home, and negotiators tried to negotiate a surrender with Holcomb, but to no avail. Authorities fired tear gas in one room, Burgess said, but Holcomb still didn’t comply.

“Upon arrival, the suspect threatened deputies with a knife,” Burgess said. “The suspect fled to the bedroom and barricaded himself in the bedroom. The family was taken out of the house, and negotiations began.”

Officials then sent in a K9, but Holcomb began stabbing the dog, according to the WSPA. At least one MP opened fire on Holcomb.

Holcomb was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was very unexpected that something like this would happen, and there are so many police officers,” Yulia Feydak, a neighbor, told WSPA. “It’s pretty scary, but you know, whatever happens, the cops know what they’re doing.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the K9 harness protected the dog from any stab wounds and the pup is expected to recover.

A sheriff’s office official told Fox News Digital that the injured K9’s name was Astro. A review of the sheriff’s office Facebook page reveals that they have several more K9s with the police, including a Labrador Retriever, a stray beagle who “loves Vienna sausages”, and a Belgian Malinois.

Another neighbor expressed shock at the number of law enforcement vehicles that arrived at the scene, saying he initially thought bad weather had caused the accident.

“I thought maybe it was an accident, because of the weather. But, I mean, there are so many, so many cars, so many police. So it looks like something more than just an ordinary accident,” Viktor Altukhov said. .

The sheriff’s statement did not include any information about arrest warrants and did not say whether Holcomb was a wanted man.
