Shooting in Lincoln Heights in Los Angeles: three policemen were injured, the suspect died

Authorities detained a suspect who is believed to have shot and killed three Los Angeles police officers on Wednesday in the Lincoln Heights area, police said. The suspect has since died.

After the first shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in the house and remained there for several hours while SWAT and other emergency personnel surrounded the building, police said.

LA Police Chief Michelle Moore said at a news conference Wednesday night that one officer was shot in the stomach, one in the leg and one in the arm. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Officers were talking and reacting as the Los Angeles Fire Department took them to LAC+ USC Medical Center, according to a LAFD spokesperson.

Moore said the officers were in “stable condition” and that his team had avoided a “potentially lethal situation”.

“We are grateful that the officers are doing well,” Moore said.

Police said the standoff began when a narcotics team arrived at the intersection of N. Mission Road and N. Broadway around 4:30 p.m. hoping to serve an arrest warrant.

According to Moore, officers found a suspect who did not comply with the requirements. Approximately two hours later, the police fired tear gas and the suspect fired a weapon at the officers, injuring three of them.

According to the police chief, all of the victims were members of the K-9 squad, and their dogs were unharmed.

Police said the suspect, who was wanted for a felony, then disappeared into an alley adjacent to an apartment complex before barricading himself inside the structure.

Around 30 emergency and SWAT vehicles arrived at the scene and successfully sent two robots into an alley where they located the suspect and applied more gas.

The suspect was then taken into custody. Police later said the suspect was dead.
