Shooting at Walmart in East Memphis: store shooting, suspect fled, police say

Authorities have responded to the Walmart report in Memphis after multiple calls came in that a man was firing a gun inside the store, officials said.

Memphis Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 8:54 p.m. and the store, located at 7525 Winchester Road, was locked down, an officer at the scene told reporters.

According to Memphis police, the suspect fled the scene. Description was not provided.

The police evacuated the store and cleared the building. There are no reports of injuries, but officials continue to investigate at the scene, FOX 13 Memphis reported.

Photographs and video from the scene show at least ten ambulances parked at both entrances to the store.

A Memphis police officer said investigators want to confirm whether a gun was actually fired or if the sounds came from something else.

“We are trying to find out if it was really a gunshot or maybe it was just a different sound, but there was a commotion so people ran,” an officer at the scene told reporters. “We have people who said they saw someone with a firearm coming out of the building.”

There is no confirmed data on how many people were in the store when the alleged shots were fired.

The potential motive for the shooting is unclear. The parking lot was mostly free as the store had to close at 23:00 local time.
