STORY LINES

bounce back
It wasn’t the start to the season Dallas had hoped for as the club lost 1-0 to Minnesota United last Saturday (who didn’t have star playmaker Emanuel Reynoso), snapping their 13-year open-leg unbeaten streak Houses. But don’t hit the panic button just yet. As head coach Nico Estevez noted at the post-game press conference, Dallas beat the Lunz 11-8 while retaining 63% possession. Now the only stats that really matter are the goals, of course, but that doesn’t mean the FCD has been replayed in any way. Dallas struggled to turn their ball possession into clear chances in the box (only one shot was on target), but much of that can be attributed to the excitement in front of the net earlier in the season. However, it will be important for Estevez’s team to bounce back with a positive result against the LA Galaxy this Saturday to prevent a poor quality Game 1 from turning into a poor start to the season overall.

Debutants
At the opening of the house, two new faces were introduced to Toyota stadium fans. Defender Giovane Jesus and forward José Mulato made their debuts as substitutes in the second half. Jesus, a right-back acquired from Brazil, replaced starter Ema Twumasi in season 67.th minute and looked impressive when going on the attack. Jesus is only 21 years old, so most likely Estevez will gradually increase his participation as he adapts to the new system. Mulato played the last 10 minutes of the first match alongside Ferreira in a two-forward system. It’s a tactic we saw occasionally last year, with Franco Jara coming off the bench to be another point of reference in the box while Ferreira went deeper to find the ball. Mulato could lay claim to a similar role — especially if Dallas is chasing a goal — against Galaxy. It is important that the young Colombian make an impact soon as new signing Jesús Jiménez is unable to obtain a P1 visa following his move from Toronto.

Galaxy
Saturday’s matchup will be the season opener for Galaxy after their highly anticipated EL Tráfico vs. LAFC match at the Rose Bowl was canceled due to heavy rain in the area. Greg Vanni’s team will also not include star forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who injured his hamstring in practice last week. The next player is likely to be Serbian international Dejan Jovelic, who scored 11 goals last year mostly as an understudy for Chicharito. He would have had 12 goals, but Maarten Paes saved a penalty on LA’s latest trip to Toyota Stadium – a place they haven’t won since 2015.
