Senator John Fetterman remains hospitalized in Washington, D.C. after a second stroke has been ruled out.

US Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, remains hospitalized in Washington, D.C. Thursday night after feeling dizzy while attending a Democratic meeting in the nation’s capital on Wednesday.

Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his May 2022 campaign, spent another night at George Washington University Hospital to get checked out. His office said Thursday night that MRIs and tests done so far have come back negative for another stroke or seizure.

While there has been no sign of a seizure so far, communications director Joe Calvello said Fetterman is still being monitored with an electroencephalogram (EEG), a device that measures brain waves.

Calvello did not share details about when Fetterman could be released, but said late Wednesday night he was “in good spirits and talking to his staff and family.”

In November, the 53-year-old was elected to replace now-retired Republican Pat Toomey in the US Senate. He defeated famed heart surgeon and GOP candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz by five percentage points, changing a seat that was critical in the Democrats’ efforts to retain a majority in the Senate.

The Associated Press reported that over $300 million was spent during the campaign, making it the most expensive Senate race in 2022.

Two days before the state’s May 15 Democratic primary, Fetterman suffered what he later described as a near-fatal stroke. His campaign took a back seat for several months as he recovered from a pacemaker with an implanted defibrillator to treat two heart conditions, atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.

When he returned fully to the campaign trail, Fetterman refused to release his medical records and reportedly did not allow his doctors to answer reporters’ questions, although he insisted that his doctors say he could make a full recovery.

In the months leading up to the November election, Republicans, including Oz, publicly questioned whether Fetterman was being honest about the effects of his stroke and wondered if he was ready to become a senator.

As a result of the stroke, Fetterman was battling an auditory processing disorder, a common consequence that makes a person unable to speak fluently. It can also change a person’s ability to quickly translate spoken conversation into meaning.

These effects were visible during the only campaign debate in the fall, when Fetterman struggled to finish his sentences, slurring words, raising more concerns about his ability to serve if elected.

During his victory speech on election night 15 days later, Fetterman told jubilant supporters that he was running for “anyone who’s ever been knocked down but got up.”

Prior to being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, Fetterman served as state lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 and mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2019.
