Seattle cop attacked while searching for stolen car, incident escalated into barricade situation

A Seattle police officer was attacked while returning a stolen vehicle early Sunday morning, according to the department.

Police said a police officer found the stolen car in the 2300 block of Franklin Avenue East around 1:30 am.

When returning the car from a neighboring apartment, a man appeared and tried to prevent the tow truck leaving with the stolen car. Seattle police said the man was identified as a 42-year-old suspect with several outstanding felony warrants. A short foot chase ensued, and the suspect was apprehended by a policeman.

While the officer was waiting for reinforcements to arrive, the suspect began yelling and calling for someone in the apartment, police said. The 49-year-old woman left the apartment and tried to stand between the officer and the detained suspect.

The second man, 32, left the apartment and started attacking a police officer to prevent him from apprehending the first suspect, police said. The two men ran away from the officer and barricaded themselves in the apartment. At this point, the woman stopped trying to prevent the arrest of the male suspects.

Hostage negotiators arrived at the scene and tried to persuade the suspects to leave the apartment. The police later obtained a search warrant for the apartment and arrested the suspects.

Seattle police said the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects in the incident were not injured.

The 42-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of assault, obstruction, resisting arrest, false reports and outstanding warrants. The 32-year-old male suspect was arrested for assault and obstruction. They were both incarcerated in the King County Jail.

The officers demanded charges of impeding the movement of the suspected woman.
