Screening of Nikitia Bryant at St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce.

FORT PIERCE, Florida — St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church held a screening for Nikitia Bryant. A large group of her family could be seen entering the building to pay their respects, as well as friends.

And then there are residents like Tonya Hart who didn’t even know Bryant, but showed up anyway.

“It happened in my community, so I decided to come and see. Everyone is unanimous for her, praying for her family, lending a helping hand,” she said.

Hart said Bryant’s death was difficult to deal with.

“Of course, as a mother, it doesn’t matter who it is, she was someone else’s child,” she said.

Bryant was one of eight shot at IIous Ellis Park. There was a car show. Bryant and her 9 year old daughter were at the food truck when the shooting started.

Bryant was injured and taken to a local hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery, but did not survive. She was 29 years old when she died.

Chief Diane Hobley-Burney of the Fort Pierce Police Department said the St. Lucie County Sheriff is leading the investigation, but they are working with them to solve the case.

“We are tracking all leads and we hope and pray that this ends soon,” she said.

Hobley-Burney said she came to the church to show support for the Bryant family.

“I am angry at those who perpetrated such violence on such a beautiful day, and losing such a beautiful person with a great spirit becomes even harder,” she said.
