School in Southeast Austin needs donations to pay for resources

The City School has served the Dove Springs area for nearly two decades.

An Tran, board member of the city’s school, says the donations help the school run.

“It fell after two years of COVID and then last year’s financial crisis. I think donations across the board have dropped,” says An Tran, board member of City School.

Eighty percent of enrolled students receive financial aid, 40% are from minorities, mostly Hispanics.

“We kind of rely on donations to these scholarship funds, partial scholarships for some middle- and lower-middle-income families, and almost full scholarships for lower-income families,” Tran says.

Donations also help pay for school resources.

“Most of the budget for a private school is staff. And, you know, very little of it goes into equipment or other overhead,” Tran says.

The mission of City School is to be socially and economically diverse.

In the future, fundraising events are planned to finance the next academic year.

“Amplify Austin is coming soon. We will be part of this. We already have suitable donors, and I will personally meet with everyone who likes the idea of this mission to look at our school,” says Tran.
