Runaway driver hits cyclist on Crandon Boulevard

KEY BISCANE, Florida. (WSVN) – A cyclist recovers in hospital after being hit by a driver who took off.

The driver was identified as Carlos Trevisson Maza. He was on an evening bike ride when he was hit by a driver who didn’t stop on Tuesday.

It happened on Crandon Boulevard, near Key Biscayne, and the man’s cousin saw it all.

“I felt a car drive past me and then I saw my cousin just go off the lane in front of me,” Aristides Maza Duerto said.

He was still waiting outside Jackson Memorial Hospital that night to hear that his cousin was fine.

“He is a very good guy. I really hope he gets out of this,” Duerto said.

Rescuers took the 48-year-old man to the hospital; he was bleeding from his head.

When the victim was taken to the hospital, the bicycle helmet was still visible with him.

The cousins are avid cyclists who ride the same trail four times a week in Key Biscayne.

“We were on the bike path. We weren’t out of the bike lane or anything like that,” Duerto said.

Duerto said the black SUV nearly hit him before crashing into his cousin.

“He did two somersaults in the air and fell to the ground on the right side of the road,” Duerto said.

“[He was on the ground] he tried to move. I asked him not to move. I asked him to stay downstairs. He was bleeding,” Duerto said.

Investigators said the driver kept moving.

“This black SUV has a big dent on the right side,” Duerto said.

Only one lane on Crandon Boulevard is currently open as the investigation continues.
