Jen Angel, a social justice activist and founder of downtown Oakland’s popular bakery Angel Cakes, is on life support and her medical team said she was unlikely to recover, according to a statement prepared Thursday by Angel’s close friends.

Angel was hospitalized on Monday following a botched robbery in downtown Oakland that left her critically injured.

Angel was robbed while sitting in a car near Webster and 21st Streets. After Angel chased the suspect to retrieve the stolen items, Angel’s clothing allegedly caught on the suspects’ car door and was “dragged over 50 feet before falling in the middle of the street.” News Jose Mercury.

In the statement, Angel’s friends shared their feelings for her and their gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received since the incident.

“Jen cultivates community wherever she goes,” wrote Pete Wojwod. “Her cupcakes, her organizational work, and every other element of her life has always been an invitation to the beautiful world she hopes to build, where everyone is valued, cared for and celebrated.”

Angel’s other friend, Moira Bierss, has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to go towards her medical expenses and her family’s financial support, which has raised more than $90,000 since Wednesday.

The 48-year-old baker founded Angel Cakes in 2008, opening her first bakery at 745 Fifth Street in 2016. Angel is also a longtime social justice activist and organizer who founded an event organization called Aid and Abet and published the bi-monthly alternative publication Clamor Magazine from 1999 to 2006.
