Republican Party Opposes China: 5 Hearings, Votes on Dozen Anti-CCP Bills

House Republicans returned from their president’s day recess, focusing on China, and were scheduled to hold several hearings and introduce dozens of bills on Tuesday regarding China’s economic and scientific prowess, its role in the spread of COVID, and its stance towards Taiwan.

Attention to China comes as bilateral tensions continue to escalate after the new government concluded that COVID-19 was most likely the result of a leak from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and the recent downing of a Chinese spy balloon over US territory. .

On Tuesday morning, the House Foreign Affairs Committee was scheduled to hold a hearing on “Dealing with Generational Challenges of CCP Aggression” to hear testimony from State Department officials about the recent episode of Chinese surveillance and China’s aggressive stance against Taiwan.

At the same time, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology was preparing to hear scholarly experts on “The United States, China, and the Struggle for Global Leadership.”

Also in the morning, the House Financial Services Committee is due to consider seven bills related to China, some aimed at protecting Taiwan from a possible invasion, and others aimed at responding to Chinese currency manipulation and other financial bills.

In Taiwan, the Financial Services Committee will vote on a bill requiring the Treasury Department to impose sanctions on financial institutions that serve high-ranking Chinese officials if China takes military action against Taiwan. Another bill, voted in committee today, directs the administration to exclude China from all major international groups as soon as China moves against the island.

The third bill encourages Taiwan’s participation in the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On China, the committee will vote on two bills to pressure China at the IMF to stop undervaluing its currency to gain a trade advantage, and another bill requiring the IMF to report on global economic risks posed by China’s financial sector . . The fourth bill would require the US Treasury Department to develop a strategy to protect US companies from predatory export subsidies China provides to its companies.

This afternoon, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on five more bills directly targeting China. These bills aim to hold China accountable for the spy balloon incident, update government guidelines for protecting Taiwan, increase funding to counter Chinese influence in third countries, adjust US trade policy towards China, and require China to release US businessman Mark Svidan, which has been held for a decade.

And on Tuesday evening, the House Select Committee on Strategic Rivalry between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party will hold prime-time hearings on “China’s threat to America.”

“We will have a series of hearings that will identify constructive and immediate solutions to the problems posed by the CCP that we can do now, even in a divided government, over the next two years,” committee chairman Mike Gallagher, of Wisconsin, said.
