Report: A transgender cricketer competes against girls at the age of twelve

The Telegraph reports that a “middle-aged” biological male who identifies as female is a source of controversy abroad as parents are unhappy that a man is allowed to play cricket matches with girls as young as 12.

Parents and coaches have reportedly sent several letters to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) demanding answers as to why biological males are allowed to compete with their girls.

In one letter, the coach claimed that the transgender player “kicks the ball harder than any other player I’ve seen in the league.”

The transgender player has reportedly caused injuries to opponents and referees in the past. One opponent injured by a transgender player “couldn’t play for months,” according to the Telegraph.

One parent called the situation “unacceptable, uncomfortable and dangerous.”

A parent of a 12-year-old girl fears their daughter and her teammates will “give up on cricket because they’re so terrified of having to face bowling and playing the field with so much power and strength.”

“Many girls at this age are just starting out in cricket, and one incident is enough to knock them out of the game,” the parent added.

The ECB has some of the most lenient rules for transgender athletes, stating that “transgender women may compete in any women-only competition, league or match and must be accepted by the gender in which they are represented.”

In light of these rules, the transgender player’s club reportedly objected to the proposal that they would have to ask the transgender cricketer to “abstain”.

However, the ECB is reportedly reviewing its policy on transgender athletes.

An ECB spokesman said:

Transgender participation is a complex area. In recreational cricket, the eligibility of players is based on their own gender with no medical requirements. However, in light of guidance from the UK Sports Council’s Equality Group (SCEG), we are currently reviewing. We will continue consultations with Sport England and other independent experts and will communicate any changes as soon as this work is completed.

Fair Play for Women sporting director Fiona Makanena praised the ECB for reviewing its policies but urged them to take stronger measures to protect women’s sport.

“[U.K. Sports Council’s Equality Group] make it clear that justice and security for women and girls are at risk if trans-identifying men are on women’s teams,” Makanena said.

“It is good to see that the ECB is reviewing its policy of allowing men into women’s teams without restrictions. If they want to protect and promote women’s cricket, they must protect the talent path. The only way out is to create women’s teams for those who were born a woman, and for no one else, ”she concluded.
