Rep. Colin Allred is considering running against Senator Ted Cruz in 2024, the source says.

If he chooses to run for Cruise’s seat in 2024, Allred will have to give up his seat in the 32nd district.

DALLAS. Congressman Colin Allred, Dallas Democrat, is considering running for the US Senate next year, challenging incumbent Ted Cruz as Cruz is running for a third term, multiple sources told WFAA Tuesday.

Allred’s team has been meeting privately with Democratic strategists for weeks now, trying to determine how feasible a statewide campaign would be and how much such a campaign would cost.

“If Congressman Allred does run, he’ll be a great candidate and be able to go toe-to-toe with Ted Cruz,” said Christie Noble, Dallas County Democratic chairman. “He’ll be able to present more Texan values to the Senate than Ted Cruz.”

Congressman Allred is widely regarded as a rising star in Democratic politics, but he is not as well known outside of North Texas.

He currently represents the 32nd District of Dallas County. It includes Park City, Lakewood, M streets, and parts of Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, and South Dallas.

Allred changed seats in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Pete Sessions, then chairman of the House Rules Committee, with 52 percent of the vote.

Allred then won re-election twice, despite the fact that the 32nd district was a swing district with many conservative voters. The redistricting last year gave the Democrats a comfortable edge.

However, if Allred is running for the US Senate, he will have to give up the seat.

And challenging Ted Cruz remains a difficult feat for any Democrat.

In 2018, Congressman Beto O’Rourke, then an El Paso congressman, brought the Democrats closer to defeating Cruz in one of the most popular races in the country that year with great energy.

Cruz still won with 50.9 percent of the vote. But it signaled to many Democrats that Cruz remains vulnerable.

O’Rourke also set fundraising records that year, raising over $80 million for his unsuccessful run. The next Democrat to challenge Cruz will likely need the same amount of money to organize a statewide campaign.

Senator Cruz announced in November that he plans to run for a third term in 2024.

Despite this, Cruz re-introduced a term limit bill.

Cruz’s bill is a constitutional amendment that would prevent US senators from serving more than two terms. It will also prevent those in the US House of Representatives from serving more than three two-year terms.

But like many other similar pieces of legislation, this bill does not seem to have support in Washington.
