Recently released audio recordings of the last moments before the deadly Dallas plane crash

Audio received from the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday shows the final moments before November collision between a World War II bomber and a fighter jet. as a result, six pilots were killed.

The audio recordings were recorded by an air boss who was in charge of operations at the Wings Over Dallas airshow, giving instructions before the maneuver that led to the tragedy.

“Audio allows you to connect different parts together,” said former military pilot and aviation attorney John Kettles.

“The air chief is talking to the first of three fighters and he tells the lead fighter to see if he sees a B-17. The lead fighter says, “I see 17.” Then he tells them to follow, and then when the first two fighters pass, he says, “Great job,” Kettles explained.

But Kettles says it’s unclear if the airspace chief noticed the third fighter was in the correct position moments before the B-17 hit.

In the last transmission before the moment of impact, the air boss can be heard saying: “Great job, fighters. Come on. The fighters will be a big pull up and to the right.”

Then the tone changes to urgent.

“Give it up. Drop it. Roll the trucks. Roll the trucks. Roll the trucks,” said the air chief.

The next few seconds are used to divert other fighters that continue flying before calling for emergency help again.

“Come on. Roll the trucks. Roll the trucks. Let’s go. Roll the trucks,” he said.

The collision, which split the bomber in two, killed everyone on board both aircraft. Nobody on the ground was hurt.

Kettles said that while NTSB investigators could attribute blame, they were unlikely to determine a single cause.

“Most likely, they will eventually come to the conclusion that these were numerous small mistakes that together led to a disastrous result,” he said.

It may still be months before that.

The Memorial Air Force, which hosted the show, was unavailable for comment on Thursday.

They’ve said in the past that they won’t speculate on what went wrong, and they’re grateful to the NTSB for investigating.
