Presidents Day 2023: what’s open, what’s closed and where to find deals

President’s Day is fast approaching.

Presidents’ Day is the last federal holiday (and for many, the last three-day weekend) until May, a day dedicated to U.S. presidents past and present.

While most government offices and banks are closed, Presidents Day, like many three-day weekends, is a good time for shoppers to find discounts on clothing, appliances, electronics and more.

History of President’s Day

Presidents’ Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February. In 2023, Presidents Day falls on February 20.

The holiday was originally established in 1879 in honor of George Washington, the nation’s first president. It was celebrated on February 22, his birthday.

In 1971, the holiday was moved to the third Monday in February as part of the Uniform Monday Holidays Act, a measure that increased the number of days off by three days for American workers.

Today, Presidents Day is an occasion to celebrate all US presidents, past and present, although some still call it Washington’s birthday.
