Pope Francis: Satan uses three ‘poisons’ to tempt us

ROME — Pope Francis said Sunday that the devil is tempting people with three “poisons,” namely attachment, mistrust, and force, to separate us from God.

In his weekly Angelus message in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff reminded pilgrims that “devil” means “one who divides” and that Satan is always seeking to separate people from God.

Recalling the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness, the pope noted that the devil is trying to “separate Jesus from the Father and distract Him from His mission of unity to us.”

According to Francis, Satan is trying to take advantage of the human condition of Jesus, who has weakened after forty days of fasting, and tries to poison him with three types of poison to undermine his mission.

“These poisons are attachment, mistrust and power,” he continued, “and we, too, always live in the midst of these temptations.”

“It’s terrible, but it’s the same for us too: attachment to material things, distrust, and the lust for power are three widespread and dangerous temptations that the devil uses to separate us from the Father and make us no longer feel like brothers and sisters among ourselves. sisters to lead us to loneliness and despair.”

“He wanted to do this with Jesus, he wants to do this with us: bring us to despair,” he added.

The pope further stressed that Jesus overcomes these temptations by “avoiding discussion with the devil and answering with the Word of God.”

“This is important: you can’t argue with the devil, you can’t talk with the devil! Jesus opposes the Word of God to him,” he said.

Jesus “never enters into dialogue with the devil, he does not negotiate with him, but fights off his insinuations with the salutary Words of Scripture,” he said.

“You cannot defeat him by negotiating with him, he is stronger than us,” he said. “We overcome the devil by faithfully opposing him with the divine Word.”
