Police say a woman died after being pulled from Lake Austin.

A woman died after a submerged car was found in Lake Austin early Tuesday morning.

Austin police said they received several 911 calls just after 3:30 a.m. about someone yelling for help on Scenic Road in West Austin.

Arriving at the scene, the police found the car submerged in the lake. They later learned that a woman was inside, so rescuers dived in to find her.

Police say the woman was pulled out of the water at 4:06 a.m. and life-saving measures were taken by rescuers, but the woman died.

The second person, believed to have been in the car with the woman, is fine and is talking to investigators.

The car crashed into one of the boat ramps at Walsh Landing. The car quickly sank, which does not surprise Mark Lewis, who lowers his boat from this place.

“Because that ramp went down so fast that as soon as they got in, it was a slope on it. You will be underwater before you know it. That’s why I always brake my truck when I’m going downhill because if something jumps out of gear or somehow my truck disengages, I’m in the water and fast, you can see how cool that is. It’s a steep ramp,” Lewis said.

When the car was towed, no major damage was found.

If this is the case of yet another deadly wrong turn onto the Austin waterway, then why this mistake was made remains confusing to those who live near the boat ramp.

“I think there is enough light. And I also think the turns are short enough that it’s hard to make such a big mistake,” said Kristen Butt.

Mark Lewis also noted that it takes a lot of maneuvering to get to the ramp.

“And then not only maneuver here and then drive into the water. I mean, I don’t understand how they did it. It was just us talking, my wife and I, because we come here quite often, and you should know how to even get here. And then it just pulls right into the wall. It’s the saddest thing I’ve heard in a long time,” Lewis said.

Austin police did not identify either the survivor or the woman who died in the accident.

The police believe it was an accident because there are no signs of foul play.
