ROYSE CITY, Texas. A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his ex-wife, according to the Royce City Police Department.

The department said Corey Wayne Griffin has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 37-year-old Chelsea Lauren Griffin.

On Thursday, February 16, Royce City police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Perdenales Drive for a welfare check. The officers said that when they entered the house, they immediately saw signs of a struggle, such as broken glass and overturned furniture.

“We had someone tell 911 they were on the phone with a woman when the phone suddenly went off and before it went off the woman was screaming,” Royce City Officer Ryan Curtis said.

During a search of the house, officers said they found Chelsea Griffin’s body lying in the kitchen. The method of death has not been disclosed at this time.

There were public divorce applications in December and protection orders last month. Royce City Police said they only arrested Cory Griffin last week.

“We sued this man for harassment. A warrant was obtained and he was arrested earlier,” Curtis said.

Police told WFAA that in early February, Corey Griffin was taken to the Rockwall County Detention Center and released. The police inform us that the judge has signed a condition that he cannot return home.

During Thursday’s investigation, Corey Griffin was identified as a suspect in the domestic violence murder. Police said he was located in Rockwall, Texas shortly thereafter and taken into custody.

The Chelsea Griffin family is in mourning and asking for some space.

“When that happens, the news travels fast and we all feel it,” Curtis said.

Corey Griffin is currently being held at the Rockwall County Detention Center.

A funding page has been created to help the family with funeral expenses. The caption reads: “She left behind two children. All proceeds will be used to organize the funeral and support the family.”
