Police investigate fatal shooting of theft suspect by Leander liquor store clerk

Leander police are conducting an investigation into a fatal shooting that took place at the Leander Liquors in the 2400 block of S. Hwy 183. An employee of the liquor store is reported to have opened fire on a group of individuals that he suspected of stealing liquor from the store.

According to police reports, three individuals left the store after taking bottles without paying. In response, the clerk on duty at the time is said to have shot at the suspects. Shortly after the incident, Cedar Park police received a call reporting a person with gunshot wounds in the 1700 block of N. Bell Boulevard, which is approximately 1.5 miles away from the liquor store.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Johnny Cabrera, was later confirmed to be one of the suspected liquor thieves. He died from his injuries while being transported to St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center.
