Plano neighbors want short-term rentals to be limited after weekend shooting

Early Sunday morning, Cannes Doctor’s neighbors in Plano’s Oakwood Glen neighborhood took refuge in their homes after hearing a flurry of gunfire outside. The homeowners said a fight between groups of people on short-term rentals in the block escalated into a shootout.

Video taken from a neighbor’s porch shows loud arguments followed by a quick shootout.

“My husband was looking out the bedroom window, I was looking out that window and I was like, ‘What’s going on? Then shots rang out. I just fell to the floor and yelled at my husband to do the same,” said Jorja Landauer, who lives on the street and has been in their home since 1999.

She and several other neighbors spent Monday morning reflecting on what had happened and spoke to reporters about their experiences and how nothing like this had ever happened before.

“I heard like ‘bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.’ I woke up and said, “I think our house is being shelled,” said Zoe Sanchez.

Sanchez said she and her husband slept in their toddler’s bedroom at the back of the house and were happy about it because they found evidence in the morning of what they had heard in their daughter’s playroom.

“There’s a bullet hole in there and not only that, there’s a bullet hole above the mirror and the play kitchen, and it goes through the wall, hits the window on the other side, and ricocheted off one of my concert posters,” Sanchez said. they end up finding the bullet in the cat litter box.

“It’s such a nice quiet area, I never thought something like this could happen here,” said Sanchez, who moved there in August.

“I told my daughter, ‘If you ever hear mom or dad say ‘come down’, that’s what you do.” I showed her, I lay down on the floor and told her “You won’t move until we tell you” and it makes me nervous when I think I need to talk to my 3 year old daughter about this because someone it’s really irresponsible,” said Sanchez, who began to choke.

Plano police said they had responded to reports of a shootout.

They arrested a 24-year-old Fort Worth man for evading arrest and possession of marijuana weighing more than 4 ounces and less than five pounds. An 18-year-old girl was also arrested for interfering with her public duties as a peace officer, police said.

As for who fired the gun on the street, police said it was still being investigated.

The rental owner told NBC 5 by phone that she was working to get details of what happened and would be back.

Neighbors said that apart from the shooting, what happened indicated a bigger problem in terms of short-term rentals, and they want it to be done away with in suburban areas like theirs.

“Maybe the party isn’t loud enough to call the police or end in a gunfight, but there is trash, cigarette butts, wine bottles,” said Terry Fraser, who recently visited the area.

She lives next door to a rental property and says she constantly hears loud parties and deals with trash.

“Some of us believe that short-term rentals should not be allowed in suburban areas,” Frazier said. We haven’t seen the owners since this party, the owners rarely go there. Some of us have met and talked to the owners, they are rarely there, they are absentee landlords, and absentee landlords have no reason to worry about community standards and the fear that parties create.”

“I think what happened here is terrible, although unintentional, it has an incredibly negative impact on the area and the city,” said Chris Brackmann, who lives on the street.

“What the city needs to do is take action and end short-term leases, this is inappropriate for this area,” said Chris Brackmann, a neighbor who wants STR to go.

“When you talk about short-term rentals, you think of places like Orlando, Disney World, Branson,” Brackmann said. — Why do we have a short-term rental in Plano? The only thing it can bring is parties, which is not what this area needs.”

Frustrated neighbors plan to speak during a public comment at a City Council meeting on Monday.
