Penthouse in former David Bowie building in New York worth $18.5 million

David Bowie and Iman were beloved residents of 285 Lafayette Street from around 1999 until Bowie’s death in 2016, when New Yorkers erected a cordoned-off temple near a downtown Manhattan building.

The penthouse is now up for sale for a whopping $18.5 million, up from $19.99 million last fall.

The seller, whose identity is hidden behind the LLC, is ready to take a small hit at the property, which was bought for $20.86 million in 2017, according to the property documents.

The six-bedroom, 5,350-square-foot home has two private decks, including one separated from Bowie and Iman’s former home by a row of planted bamboo.

The residence has 20 large windows overlooking Rue Lafayette for 120 feet and 12 French doors leading to the terraces.

Design details include 11-foot ceilings and a private elevator landing leading to a foyer that leads to a living/dining room with gas fireplace. Next comes the chef’s kitchen with a 146-bottle Sub-Zero wine cooler and access to one of the terraces.

The master bedroom has two walk-in closets, one with a walk-in closet, and a bathroom with a window. There is also a family room with a second fireplace which leads to the terrace and other bedrooms.

The late 19th century building once housed the Hawley & Hoops chocolate factory.

Other notables in the building included hotel owner Ian Schrager, who added penthouses when he converted the apartment in 1999, said listing broker Brett Mitchell of Compass. Mitchell puts the property up for sale with Leonard Steinberg, also of Compass. Other residents include Paul Tudor Jones. Past residents have included Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Sienna Miller, Alex Rodriguez and Courtney Love.

The composition was designed by IMG’s Cheryl Eisen in cool textural neutrals and natural materials.
