“Part of our life” | Cypress neighbors need a break from bright lights due to Grand Parkway fixtures

Huge chandeliers along the Grand Parkway at 290 light up the Cypress houses when it should be dark outside.

CYPRESS, Texas. Imagine getting ready for bed, but your backyard is lit up like a football field in Friday night lights.

Cypress neighbors have been dealing with this problem ever since massive lanterns were installed along the Grand Parkway last year.

Tammy Speaks and her husband have been calling them home since 2017, but a year ago, the lights went on at 99 US 290.

“Now it is part of our life. We don’t have a choice. We don’t like it,” Speaks said. “The brightness is amazing.”

Neighbors shared photos of the same problem. Everyone tried to find a solution, but nothing came of it.

“It’s very frustrating. We just don’t have the answers,” Speaks said.

So Speaks decided to call KHOU 11 News.

“Guys, you were helping a woman pay her water bills, so I thought maybe (you) could help us get some answers,” she said.

KHOU 11 News contacted the Texas Department of Transportation and within an hour they said there are shutters they can put on tall mast lights that control how far and at what angle they shine. They said they would send a team to check the area.

After 12 months of inactivity, the neighbors are finally seeing the progress they need.

“Very cautiously optimistic. I hope this helps,” Speaks said.
