Oscar-winning director of the film “Everything is everywhere at once” defends transvestites and children of transvestites: “Doesn’t threaten anyone”

At the most overtly political moment of the evening, All Everywhere All at once co-director Daniel Scheinert defended drag queens and drag kids by accepting his Oscar for best director on Sunday at the 95th annual Academy Awards.

A visibly flustered Daniel Scheinert thanked his parents during his speech: “Thank you for not stifling my creativity when I was making really disturbing horror movies, or really twisted comedies, or dressing like a kid, which doesn’t threaten anyone!” ”

Scheinert’s remark drew rapturous applause from the celebrity audience at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Scheinert appeared to hint at the controversy surrounding kid drag shows when states, including Tennessee, passed laws to ban the often obscene and sexually explicit performances in front of minors.

As a result, Hollywood stars are rallying around kid-friendly drag shows, with celebrities such as RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, Gabrielle Union, the B-52s and Melissa McCarthy showing their support.

Daniel Scheinert shared the award for directing with his Everything is everywhere co-director Daniel Kwan. (They are collectively known as The Daniels.) The indie sci-fi comedy won a total of seven Oscars on Sunday, including Best Picture.
