Orange County Schools Form Student Behavior Disciplinary Task Force

ORANGE COUNTY, Florida. “Orange County Public Schools are addressing what they say is a growing problem in the classroom – student misbehavior.

As many in the district report fighting and students disrespecting teachers, a new disciplinary task force has been created to help deal with the growing problems.

The task force, which includes district staff, parents and community members, met for the first time Thursday at district headquarters.

In August 2022, a state grand jury on school safety charged OCPS with underreporting criminal activity in schools to Florida State officials, noting potential security breaches on Apopka campuses.

Superintendent Maria Vazquez said that after several social gatherings last fall, parents frequently raised concerns about behavior problems in the classroom.

“People may not know now: if you don’t have a child at school or you are in a school where discipline may not be an issue, you may not know that this really worries us and there are so many things Parents can do to help us ‘, Vasquez said.

The task force also includes the Orlando police, representatives from the sheriff’s office, the NAACP, mental health professionals, and a child psychiatrist.

Task Force member Pernell Krosky, dean of Okoi Middle School, said it’s important for educators to have a passion for helping students succeed.

“Honestly, my biggest motivation is that I want to change the world,” Krosky said. “When I see a student as a problem student, if you will, I look at that child and think, ‘That’s why I’m here.’ That’s what I need to fix.”

The first meeting was an introduction to members and included a presentation of the working group’s work plan for the next few months.

Vasquez said it is important that the group develop a universal standard of behavior for the district so that students know what is expected of them.

At the next meeting, participants are expected to share ideas that could become solutions. The next meeting of the working group is scheduled for March 23.
