One-year-old child dies, several injured in Northern Highway crash: HPD

HOUSTON – A one-year-old child died and a three-year-old child is in critical condition after an accident in north Houston on Sunday, the Houston Police Department said.

Ambulance crews responded to reports of an accident on block 7900 of the Northern Highway near Little York Road at around 10:34 p.m.

According to HPD, the Honda crossover was heading south on the main lanes of the Northern Freeway and lost control, crashed into the center lane and overturned several times. According to investigators, two children who were siblings and one adult jumped out of the car. All three were taken away by an ambulance.

According to investigators, the one-year-old victim died in the hospital. The 3-year-old child and adult thrown from the vehicle are in critical condition, according to HPD. Officers said two more children were taken by ambulance with minor injuries.

In total, police said three adults, including the victim’s mother, and four children were in the car at the time of the crash, and none of the children were wearing seat belts. Investigators said a car seat was found in the trunk of the car.

The driver was detained while the investigation is ongoing. Officers said it was too early to say if any charges would be filed.
