One dead and three hospitalized in dog attack on West Side

Chief Charles Hood called it a “terrible scene” when authorities responded Friday afternoon.

SAN ANTONIO — One person was killed and at least three others were injured, including a San Antonio fire captain who arrived on the scene after a pair of American Staffordshire Terriers attacked them in the western area Friday afternoon, according to reports. authorities.

Officials identified the deceased as an elderly man, possibly in his 80s.

Two dogs, including a third that was unleashed in the area, were captured by the Animal Care Service and will remain in ACS custody pending an investigation.

South African crews who arrived at 2800 Desplat Street around 1:45 p.m. Friday noticed one of the victims “being dragged by a dog (and) completely bloody before they exited the fire truck,” Chief Charles Hood said.

Hood added that firefighters began fighting off the dogs with pipes as the emergency escalated into a rescue.

The captain of the SAFD was bitten on the leg during the struggle. Another woman was hospitalized in critical condition but is conscious, while another man was bitten on the arm, Hood said.

“No one expects them to go out and fight dogs like they did today,” Hood said of his teams that responded. “Terrible scene, and terrible for our firefighters who were part of it.”

ACS director Shannon Sims said the dogs were previously impounded in 2021 for a “light bite”. The ACS will be investigating and it is not clear at this time if any criminal charges will be filed.
