Official: Seven killed in two shootings in California area

The victims were killed in a shootout on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles south of San Francisco.

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Seven people were killed in two shootings Monday at a mushroom farm and trucking firm in a coastal region south of San Francisco, and a suspect is in custody, officials said.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine said four people were killed at a farm and three at a trucking facility on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles (48 km) south of San Francisco.

It was not immediately clear how these places were connected.

California Senator Josh Becker, who represents the area, said people were killed in separate shootings. San Mateo County Superintendent David Canepa tweeted that one shooting took place at a mushroom farm.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that the suspect was in custody.

“There is no ongoing threat to the public at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.

Television footage from the area showed the police detaining the man without incident.

Aerial television footage also showed police gathering evidence at a farm with dozens of greenhouses.

The shooting followed the killing of 11 people late Saturday night at a dance hall in Southern California.

“We are sick of today’s tragedy at Half Moon Bay,” Dave Pine, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. Gun violence must stop.”
