DEA shoots man after trying to run down agents with car during stop in Fort Lee

DEA agents opened fire on a man in New Jersey after he tried to hit them with his car during a traffic stop, officials said, which went wrong.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday near the corner of Whiteman Street and Lemoine Avenue in Fort Lee, as agents tried to question a man in a car as part of an investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration said. According to officials, that’s when the driver tried to hit them with a car.

The agents opened fire on the car, with at least one of the shots hitting the driver. The black sedan then crashed into a pole and the driver was taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately clear, nor was his identity.

Mobile phone video showed guns pointed at the men on the ground, both of whom were handcuffed, as federal officers brought the situation under control.

Investigators are not talking about the reasons for the suspect’s detention. DEA Special Agent Timothy McMahon said two agents were involved in the shooting and that the Bergen County Attorney’s Office would be investigating.

Sudden shots shook the neighborhood.

“I look over my shoulder to the left, I hear five pops … and all I see is that Toyota just crashed into a pole. A bunch of police, in a couple of minutes more police, they are blocking the roads,” a local resident said. owner of the Tom Ko jewelry store. “No one really knew what to do, so we just ducked at the sound of the pop and saw that eventually the police took control.”

The security guard at the intersection told NBC New York that he was supposed to be at his post at the intersection where the shooting took place, but he was late today.

“That’s my post there, so I’m lucky,” the traffic controller said. “This is crazy, I get goosebumps when I saw all this.”
