North Carolina Democrat A. G. Stein announces run for governor, immediately criticizes Lieutenant Governor Robinson

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein criticized Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s stance on abortion and LGBTQ+ rights when Stein announced his candidacy for governor on Wednesday.

“Today there is a different set of bomb throwers who threaten our freedoms and our future. While some politicians stir up division, stir up hatred and fan the flames of bigotry,” Stein says in the Governor’s 2024 video message, along with clips of Robinson speaking at various public events. events, including a speech with former President Donald Trump.

Stein, a Democrat, refers to Robinson’s remarks during a May 2022 speech at Charlotte’s Freedom House in which Robinson stated that “we are called to be led by men.”

“When it’s time to fight Goliath, [God] sent by David. Not Davita. David,” Republican Robinson says in the clip.

Robinson later released a video to respond to the comments, stating that they were “aimed at men, encouraging men to stand up and take on a leadership role.”

The lieutenant governor said he encourages men to become leaders in various areas of their lives, including their homes, families and communities.

The ad then cuts to another clip of Robinson at a separate event, where he calls homosexuality “filth”. These comments, in part, led several North Carolina representatives at the time to call for his resignation.

Stein’s advertisement then criticizes Robinson’s stance on abortion by showing a passage in which Robinson calls abortion “a scourge to be rid of from this earth”.

“Robinson wants to tell you who you can marry when you’re pregnant and who you should hate,” Stein says before formally announcing his candidacy for governor.

“I’m running for governor because I believe in a completely different North Carolina. One that is based on our shared values ​​of freedom, justice and opportunity for all. And I believe that the battles we choose show who we are and define what kind of state we will become, ”Stein says in the advertisement.

Stein’s gubernatorial nomination announcement came 14 months before the primary as he seeks to replace Democratic governor Roy Cooper. Cooper’s term is limited from re-election, and he previously served four terms as Attorney General himself. Stein served for several years under Cooper as head of the Department of Justice’s consumer protection division.

Stein also released his list of “more than 150” endorsements, which includes former Gov. Jim Hunt, current House Minority Leader Robert Reeves, and former State Supreme Court Chief Burley Mitchell. along with a number of other state and local representatives.
