New York teenager sentenced to jail for fatally stabbing rival cheerleader in Mount Vernon

A 15-year-old girl will spend up to nine years in prison in connection with the April 2022 stabbing of a New York high school cheerleader.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s office said on Tuesday Judge Susan Cacache sentenced the teen, who has not been named because she is a minor, to three to nine years in prison after she pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in December.

The victim, 16-year-old Kayla Green, was a cheerleader at Mount Vernon High School when she was killed.

The fatal event occurred during a major brawl following a parade honoring the 12th state championship won by the high school basketball team.

Green, a sophomore and MVHS junior varsity cheerleading captain, was reportedly stabbed in the stomach due to a “long-standing” rivalry among cheerleaders in the city, according to the judge. At the hospital, she was pronounced dead.

In an earlier report, the district attorney’s office said the girl who killed her was part of an independent cheerleading club that Green used to be a member of, according to the New York Post.

The defendant apologized in court before sentencing, expressing remorse for her “wrong choice”.

“I think about all the different decisions I could have made that day that would have kept Kayla alive and saved her family from this heartache. But that’s why everyone is here today, because I made the wrong choice,” CBS New York reported.

She also apologized for taking her older sister and daughter.

Green’s family reportedly argued that the teen’s sentence and apology were insufficient, as she could have been out of jail after a few years.

“Her killer will be out in three years to live his life, have a family, make a career. My daughter will never see this,” victim’s mother Laverne Gordon said, according to CBS 2.

District Attorney Mimi Roca said in a statement that Green’s death was senseless and devastated society.

“As the Mount Vernon family and community continue to mourn, I want to renew my commitment to working with our vital community partners to meaningfully prevent violence and interference, especially against our youth,” Roh wrote. “I know that nothing can take away the pain of losing a child. My office will do everything possible within the laws of New York to prosecute in these cases.”

The maximum sentence a 15-year-old could receive was between three and 10 years due to New York’s juvenile offender laws.

She will serve time in a juvenile detention center until she turns 18, at which time she will be taken into custody by the state Department of Corrections.
