New York City Mayor Eric Adams to visit migrant shelters and visit southern border during trip to El Paso

Mayor Eric Adams has a busy schedule Sunday in El Paso, Texas, where he will see a border crisis that has stretched his own city to its absolute limits.

Hizzoner will spend the day visiting migrant shelters, visiting a Border Patrol processing facility and meeting with local authorities, including El Paso Mayor Oscar Lizer, before flying home to the Big Apple.

He and Lizer, who has brought thousands of migrants to New York by bus, will meet to discuss how the border crisis has affected the local population, Adams’ office said.

Adams will visit a local migrant shelter, service provider, and customs and border control. He will also visit the southern border.

Adams will hold a press conference later that day.

His trip to the Lone Star State came two days after he predicted the migrant crisis would cost New York $2 billion — double what he originally thought.

“We must ask ourselves where we are [were] is already dealing with a potential $5-6 billion budget deficit in the coming years. Where does this money come from? Adams said during an interview with Caribbean Power Jam radio on Friday, the day after he announced cuts across almost every city agency.

“This money comes from our schools. It’s about our public safety, our hospitals, our infrastructure, our ACS services, it’s our tax revenue, and we need to see the impact of every service we have in the city,” Adams continued, calling it “irresponsible.” that there has been no federal response to the border crisis yet.

Last week, Adams said more than 36,000 migrants had landed in New York since the spring.

On Friday, he urged Gov. Kathy Hochul, who made no mention of the migrant crisis in her State of the Union address last week, to immediately take 500 migrants out of his hands through an “emergency request for mutual assistance.”

“We are on the verge of collapse. Based on our projections, we assume that we will not be able to continue to shelter incoming asylum seekers on our own,” Adams said.

The Adams administration was forced to pay $275 million under a New York Hotel Association contract to accommodate at least 5,000 migrants as waves of asylum seekers continue to arrive in the city from the southern border.

An “emergency” deal between the city’s Department of Homeless Services and the Hotel Association puts the city on the hook for up to $55,000 per migrant.
