New Jersey’s proposed “Seinfeld bill” to crack down on telemarketers

New Jersey legislators propose a new bill to crack down on telemarketers.

Senate Bill No. 921 require the telemarketer to provide the name and phone number of the person they represent within 30 seconds of the call.

The bill also requires disclosure of the mailing address of the telemarketer and any company on whose behalf the telemarketer conducts telemarketing on any website owned or operated by the telemarketer and in any subsequent written communication to customers.

Republican Senator John Bramnik (R-Westfield) who is the author of the bill along with Democratic Senator Nellie Pou (D-Paterson), told FOX Business that he has been bothered by “extremely offensive” telemarketing calls for years.

Branmick said telemarketers are trained to give you their offers and in most cases will never answer any of your questions, such as who they are or what their phone number is.

“I find it extremely offensive if you are called by someone who is trying to sell you something and will not answer questions about who they are, where they are, or what their phone number is,” Branmick said. “It shocks me. And then the minute you ask those questions, they just hang up.”

While proposing the bill during a committee hearing, Bramnik recalled an episode of “Seinfeld” when Jerry asks a telemarketer to tell him his name and phone number.

When the telemarketer refuses, Jerry replies, “Oh, I guess you don’t want people calling you at home.”

Bramnik said that he was not necessarily inspired by the episode, although he admitted that “to really grab the attention of the media or the public, you need something other than a good proposed law.”

He continued, “Sometimes you need to talk about something that gets their attention.”

So far, the bill has attracted the attention of various media outlets, who have dubbed it the “Seinfeld Bill.”

The bill must first pass through the Senate and the State Assembly before going to the office of Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy for signature.
