New Jersey teacher shot to death; Husband arrested in Pennsylvania after his daughter called 911

A third-grade teacher was gunned down Tuesday morning at her home in Jersey City after she was allegedly the victim of domestic violence by her husband, who was arrested out of state hours later, a senior police source and others. confirmed by law enforcement sources.

Sources identified the victim as Temara King, who had just celebrated her 35th birthday just two weeks earlier and was teaching at Public School No. 5 on Mercedes Street. She was killed in her apartment on Bergen Avenue shortly before 7:30. Sources said her 14-year-old daughter called 911 and told the dispatcher that her father had shot her.

The father, identified by sources as Lucus Cooper, 39, was detained by Pennsylvania State Police later Tuesday, senior police sources said. The charges against him were not immediately clear, and the Hudson County prosecutors who led the investigation did not immediately publicly confirm the details of the case.

Family members described King as a loving mother. She was also a loving teacher, according to Jersey City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez.

“Our hearts are broken by the sudden violent loss of Temara King,” Fernandez said in a statement. “She was an outstanding educator and dedicated teacher. We will miss her and pray for her family as they deal with the tragedy.”

All morning, investigators were seen uploading evidence.

King received a master’s degree in special education and recently received a promotion.
