New Emergency Room Coming to South Dallas Medical Center

Workers say the opening of a new, larger, high-tech emergency room will help the South Dallas hospital reduce patient wait times and improve quality of care.

DALLAS. A new emergency room will open soon at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in south Dallas.

Crews are busy assembling furniture, decorating rooms, and putting the finishing touches on the hospital’s new emergency room.

“We are so happy to be able to provide such a space for our community,” said Fran Laukaitis, president of Charlton Methodist Medical Center.

The new facility expands the hospital’s acute care capacity from 45 beds to 70 beds. It will include eight triage wards and space for additional ambulances.

“From 50 to 80 ambulances a day come to our hospital, and more than 200 patients a day,” Laukaitis explained.

A new and larger emergency room also means more staff to serve patients.

“We are looking forward to change,” said Filisha Oliver, a registered nurse.

The changes also mean greater access to the latest technology at the Level 3 Trauma and Stroke Center. Staff said they intentionally used state-of-the-art technical equipment.

Paying attention to layout and design was also a priority. Long halls and strategically located offices have been a priority in terms of patients’ proximity to doctors and nurses as demand for emergency services in the region continues to grow.

“You won’t have to wait any longer. Newer object. New equipment. Everything is just newer,” explained Dr. Jeff Butterfield.

A $71 million investment makes it possible to build a new emergency department.

“I think this is a complete game changer. I think this speaks of the commitment of the Methodists to the southern sector,” Laukaitis said.

Charlton Methodist Medical Center’s new emergency room is located on the corner of W. Wheatland Road and Bolton Boone Drive in Dallas, Texas. The Emergency Department officially reopens to patients on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.
