Michigan State University shooting victim Alexandria Werner remembered during Clawson’s candlelight vigil

Hundreds of people gathered to picket Tuesday night to pay tribute to Michigan State University student Alexandria Werner, a third-year student who was among three killed in Monday night’s campus shooting. Five others were seriously injured as a result of the shooting.

Mourners, many dressed in heavy jackets and sweaters, faced the cold in Clawson, Michigan, and gathered on the Clawson High School football field to light candles and remember Werner, an “incredibly loved” member of the school and community.

Werner graduated from Clawson High in 2020 and she “was and remains incredibly loved by everyone,” District Superintendent Billy Schellenbarger said Tuesday. “She was an excellent student, athlete, leader, and set an example of kindness every day of her life.”

“If you knew her, you loved her and we will always remember the lasting impact she had on all of us,” Schellenbarger said, noting that her family is “mourning but certainly already feeling the uplifting support of this huge community.” .

In a statement Tuesday, Clawson Public Schools added: “We will forever remember the lasting impact Alex had on all of us. Our hearts are broken by the loss of this incredible young man we loved so much.”

During the candlelight vigil, the congregation also stood in silence for 24 seconds as Werner wore the No. 24 jersey when she was a basketball player at Clawson High.

“While you are silent,” Schellenbarger said over the speakerphone, “think of her smile, think of that hero who has been among us for 20 years.”

The candle vigil was organized by Schellenbarger.

The school is located in a suburb of Detroit about 90 miles east of Michigan State University.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Werner studied complex biology and anthropology.

She was survived by her mother, father, brother and sister.

“Bryan was our leader and we loved him,” the group said. “He cared deeply for his Phi Delta brothers, his family, Michigan State University and Phi Delta Theta. We will miss Brian deeply and mourn his death deeply as our chapter stands by each other during this difficult time.”

Anderson served her community and prioritized helping those around her, her family said in a statement, which described her as “sweet and loving” with an “infectious smile.”

“As much as we loved her, she loved us and others even more,” the family said. “She passionately loved helping her friends and family, helping children, and serving people.”

Police identified the gunman as Anthony McRae, a 43-year-old man with no connection to the school. He opened fire in the study hall and student union building shortly after 8:00 pm.

Five people remain in critical condition after the shooting.
