Michigan man who set fire to Planned Parenthood clinic gets 5 years in prison

A man inspired by a church sermon to set fire to a family planning clinic in southwest Michigan was sentenced Monday to five years in prison.

Joshua Brereton, 25, pleaded guilty to setting fire to the Kalamazoo clinic last July. The clinic was closed at this time.

Joshua Brereton was sentenced to five years in prison for setting fire to a family planning clinic in Michigan.

“This offense was committed impulsively after he heard a church sermon about “changing the world for the better.” … Looking back, Joshua looks at himself every day with great regret,” Defense Attorney Donald Smith said in a court filing.

POLICE SAYS PLANNED ILLINOS FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATED AS ARSON

U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney imposed a five-year prison sentence, the mandatory minimum under federal law.

Repairs to the clinic and lost revenue due to the arson totaled about $33,000, prosecutors said, noting that Brereton started three separate fires outside the building.

“While Americans may differ greatly on matters of law and policy, violence is never an acceptable means of resolving our disputes,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a statement.
