Massive land bridge and prairie at Memorial Park now open to the public

HOUSTON – A city project that has been created over the years is presented.

Members of the public were given the opportunity to visit the new Kinder Landbridge and Prairie.

On Saturday, leaders hosted the largest picnic in the state to celebrate.

Officials began the project in 2020, and Houstonians say they are proud of the completed work.

“Over the years, I have watched the growth and changes that have taken place in Memorial Park,” said one visitor.

Kinder Landbridge and Prairie is a major part of Memorial Park’s master plan, which was confirmed by the city council in 2015 to restore the park’s ecological systems.

Finally, people will be able to walk through the tunnels opened last year and today.

“It adds an extra element to not only Memorial Park, but also to Houston, because I don’t think there’s anything like it in the state of Texas. The size of this park is just huge and incredible and I think it will bring more people to Memorial Park and this part of Houston.”

The president of the memorial park’s conservation organization says the land bridge provides a safe crossing for park users, connects wildlife corridors and helps manage stormwater.

“This project is not just a passageway or a bridge. This passage focuses on ecology, sustainability, biodiversity, stormwater management. This project is a bridge to the future of Houston,” said Memorial Park Conservation President Shelley Arnold.

Part of the overall 10-year plan will include additional trails and bridges to add connections to the park.
