Mass shooting in California: who is the suspect Huu Kang Tran?

A suspect in a mass shooting has been found dead after killing 10 people and injuring 10 people in a Saturday night attack in Monterey Park, California.

Huu Kang Tran, 72, was found dead Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the white van in which the suspect fled the scene, authorities say. Tran was found in Torrance, which is about 30 minutes from Monterey Park, along with a gun and other evidence. Monterey Park is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said there were no other suspects at large and a possible motive was unclear.

A shooting at the Star Ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park killed five women and five men and injured 10 others, the sheriff’s office said. The city where the incident took place has a large population of Asians, and the shooting took place during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Who is Huu Kang Tran?

On Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified Tran as a suspect in the Monterey Park shooting. Authorities found Tran dead in the van that had been used to flee the scene of the shooting. The gun was also found in a van found in Torrance.

It is unknown if Tran was shooting at people or shooting indiscriminately when he started shooting.

He reportedly attempted to stage a second shooting at the Lai Lai ballroom in Alhambra City about 30 minutes after the first incident, but people at the site snatched the gun from him before he fled.

Tran’s wife said in a media interview on Sunday that her husband was giving informal lessons at the Star ballroom dance studio.

Another longtime acquaintance also said that Tran frequented the dance studio, though it’s not clear when he last visited the studio.
