Marvel Star Simu Liu Brings Peace and Serenity to Chase Center’s New ‘Sensory Room’

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by loud music or crowds at a Warriors game, now you have somewhere to go.

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Simu Liu, who plays the lead Asian superhero in the 2021 blockbuster. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringshelped open a revamped “sensory room” at the Chase Center on Monday. The room is also named after Liu, who funded its construction.

Carpeted walls, noise-cancelling chairs, bean bags, games and adjustable lighting make the room a soothing oasis for basketball fans looking for some quiet amid the overexertion of a home game. Also in the room there is a refrigerator for nursing mothers to store milk.

“You instantly feel disconnected from the fans, the stadium, the lights, the sounds,” Liu said in a video interview.

The room, which Liu described as small but cozy, was designed and built by KultureCity, a nonprofit organization that advocates for greater acceptance of people with “invisible disabilities.” This is part of a movement to make cultural experiences more accessible to people with certain sensory sensitivities.

Guests can stay in the room for up to 15 minutes.

Liu, 33, a Chinese-Canadian actor, has been outspoken about mental health since rising to fame following his huge success. shang chi, part of which takes place in San Francisco. A sequel is currently in development.

“Sometimes you just need a quiet and pleasant place,” he said. told reporters. “Calm down, look at some lights, take a breath and rest.”

Liu also rang the bell on Monday night to kick off Bruce Lee Night in the Warriors’ game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Warriors won 141–114.
