Man gets 60 years for murdering Fort Worth cop

Samuel Mayfield, 37, pleaded guilty to the 2018 murder of police officer Garrett Hull.

Fort Worth, Texas. On Tuesday, a man was sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to the 2018 murder of a Fort Worth police officer, prosecutors said.

Samuel Mayfield, 37, pleaded guilty to charges of murdering Garrett Hull, an officer promoted to corporal after his death. Mayfield did not shoot Hull, but he was one of three men pursued by police after the bar robbery in which Hull was killed, Tarrant County prosecutors said.

Police said Mayfield, Timothy Huff and Daysion Steptoe confronted Hull and a group of undercover and uniformed officers after the trio robbed a bar in Fort Worth. The three men ran in different directions when they saw the officers.

According to prosecutors, Steptoe opened fire, killing Hull. Another officer then fatally shot Steptoe.

Mayfield and Huff were arrested and charged in Hull’s death, prosecutors said. The prosecutor’s office said Texas law allows a person to be held criminally responsible for the actions of another person if there is conspiracy to commit one crime and commit another crime.

Huff was found guilty of capital murder last year and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

During Huff’s trial in June 2022, Hull’s wife, Sabrina, spoke out about the way she spoke to her husband prior to the incident.

“These guys are really dangerous, baby. I mean it’s bad,” she recalled his words. “He felt that there would be shooting. And I said, “Don’t put this out into the universe. I do not want to talk about this”. He said, “Well, we need to talk about these things.”

One of Hull’s co-workers, Dallas Connor, also spoke out to talk about Hull.

“He was a very driven person. When he had a goal that we were working on, he wasn’t going to deviate,” Connor said. “He won’t stop until the mystery is solved, the suspect is apprehended.”
