Man arrested after two killed in Ben White Blvd. motorcycle crash

The crash happened at 500 E. Ben White Blvd.

AUSTIN, Texas — A suspect has been arrested after two people were killed in an overnight crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle on Dec. 18.

Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the crash at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday at 500 E. Ben White Blvd service road. That’s in South Austin near St. David’s South Austin Medical Center and St. Edward’s University. 

ATCEMS pronounced one person dead at the scene and performed CPR on another person, but the second person later died as well. Both victims were adults. 

According to police, the driver of the truck, 51-year-old Roberto Rangel, failed to yield right of way while exiting a parking lot. As a result, the motorcyclist crashed into his vehicle.

The motorcyclist was identified as Mark Navaez, 23. His female passenger, who also died on scene, was not identified.

Rangel was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

The Austin Fire Department also responded to the scene. 

This case is being investigated as the city’s 110th fatal crash of 2022, resulting in 116 fatalities for the year. On this date last year, there were 108 fatal crashes resulting in 117 deaths.
