Maine mother demands investigation after school allegedly teaches daughter secret gender reassignment

A Maine mother is demanding an investigation into her daughter’s former school after administrators allegedly kept the girl’s gender reassignment attempt hidden from her family.

Amber Lavigne claims that a social worker at the Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscott gave her 13-year-old daughter an adapter device called a “breast binder.”

“Public school districts should never withhold anything from parents, especially information about their child’s mental health or physical well-being,” Lavigne’s attorney Adam Shelton told Fox News Digital.

“But that’s exactly what Great Salt Bay Community School did to Amber Lavigne by secretly advising Amber’s 13-year-old daughter to change sex and asking the child not to tell her parents about it.”

Lavigne found a breast patch on her daughter in December, and the girl first told her mother she got it from a friend before she changed her story.

“I want you to think long and hard if you want to share anything else with me about this because I’m about to get in touch with your friend’s mom,” Lavigne told her daughter in an interview with National Review.

In the fall, the daughters assigned a new social worker, Samuel Roy, to the public school, but Lavigne said she was never alerted to the change and Roy never contacted her. She also discovered that school staff allegedly called her daughter by a new name and used male pronouns.

Lavigne said she immediately contacted Superintendent Lynsey Johnston and Principal Kim Schaff about the chest binder and called Schaff.

“I poured out my heart to this woman. She completely validated my feelings and made me feel like something had to be done,” Lavigne told the National Review.

But after Schaff and Johnston allegedly met with a social worker, Lavigne said school officials appeared to side with Roy and refused to turn over her daughter’s paperwork, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

“These people had no desire to work with me as a person,” she said, citing the fact that she received no response from school leaders when she attended a board meeting in December.

According to the National Review, she soon pulled her daughter out of school and now teaches her at home.

“I think it shows that we, as parents, are no longer responsible for our children. It’s really scary,” Lavigne told Laura Ingram last week in an interview with Fox News.

The mother, who also has a 1-year-old son and a 4-year-old son, is pressuring the school to launch an investigation into the social worker.

This month, the Goldwater Institute sent a letter to the chairman of the Great Salt Bay School Board calling for an investigation and a policy update so that parents are alerted when their child’s mental and physical health is being affected by decisions made at the school.

IDAHO SCHOOLS ORDERED TO KEEP PARENTS IN THE DARK ABOUT STUDENT GENDER AND NAME CHANGE

“Parents have a constitutional right to control and direct decisions about the education, upbringing and health care of their children,” her lawyer told Fox News Digital. “But parents cannot effectively do this if schools actively withhold information from them. That is why we are intervening to hold the school accountable for violating Amber’s constitutionally protected parental rights.”

Lavigne is a self-described Democrat and “quite an open person” who runs a mental health organization that has previously worked with transgender people.

Although her daughter is still struggling with her gender identity, Lavigne said the teen liked feminine things like makeup and nail paint when she was younger.

“This is one of the strangest things about this case,” Lavigne said in an interview with National Review. “I wanted so badly for my daughter to become an athlete because I was an athlete, I was an evil tomboy when I was growing up. I thought, “She’s going to be a basketball superstar.” I couldn’t get that girl to take a goddamn baseball and throw it at me to save her life. She was in tutus and My Little Ponies.”

Lavigne added in a Fox News comment.Ingram Anglethat the school is trying to “intimidate” her “silence”.

“It’s like the most toxic relationship you’ve ever been in,” she said. “I’m being gaslighted.”

Last month, the school board sent out a letter to the community alleging that attention to a teen’s alleged covert sex change attempt “outright” led to the school receiving bomb threats.

“Some parties are spreading a highly inaccurate and one-sided story that the board cannot specifically respond to given our obligation to maintain the confidentiality of student and staff information as required by Maine law,” the board said in a Jan. 1 letter. 14, according to the Lincoln County News. “Unfortunately, this false narrative has led directly to the bomb threats that have interrupted our students’ education for the past few weeks.”

School representatives did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Checking the school’s staff page revealed that Roy still works at the school.
