Lunar New Year celebrations begin this weekend in North Texas

The Lunar New Year celebration officially begins on Sunday, January 22nd.

Asian American organizations in DFW hold events throughout the week to celebrate the holiday.

Gallery Dallas kicks off its celebration early with an art installation of nearly 250 huge lanterns above the ice rink to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. The beautiful Lantern Festival will end by January 20th and run until Sunday, February 19th.

Galleria Dallas will also host the HD Lion Dance Foundation, who will perform a colorful dragon dance at 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 28, on Level 1 near Sephora.

“Galleria Dallas is committed to celebrating our diverse visitor base with cultural events such as our Lunar New Year events,” said Angie Fried, CEO of Galleria Dallas. “We are delighted to host once again this year our exciting lantern festival and cultural dancers from the HD Lion Dance Foundation.”

According to Asian tradition, the Year of the Rabbit (and the Year of the Cat for Vietnam, known as Tết) is predicted as a year of hope, mainly because the rabbit/cat is associated with peace, prosperity and longevity in Asia.

ATS will also host lunar new year otaku festival January 28 and January 29 from 12:00 to 22:00 every day. It has free admission and free parking, as well as food vendors, lion and dragon dances, sumo demonstrations, cosplay contests, and more.

Northpark Center in Dallas will host a free festival on Saturday, January 21. Hosted by the University of Texas Crow Museum of Asian Art, the annual Chinese New Year Festival will be held from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Northpark Center with lion and dragon dances, martial arts demonstrations, and other fun activities.

Grandiose landscape in the colony will host a free Lunar New Year Festival at the Topo Chico Hard Seltzer Stage & Lawn from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with stage performances, tvendors of traditional food products, crafts for kids, gifts and more.

North Oak Cliff Branch Library in Dallas holds a Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, January 21, from 11:00 to 14:00. All ages are invited to celebrate with the local Taiko Goisagi Daiko Drum Ensemble, which presents traditional Japanese drumming performances and Lunar New Year crafts that children can put together led by local artist Jennifer Wester.

Richardson China Town hosts the 2023 Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, January 28 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hosted by the Dallas Chinese Community Center, the free event will feature food, cultural performances, and cultural activities such as origami, the Chinese yo-yo, and more.

Henan Provincial General Association in Dallas organizes a gala concert on Sunday, January 22, from 17:30 to 20:30. Tickets cost $15 (including lottery ticket) for adults, $5 for children. Children under 10 years old enter free of charge. The evening includes authentic Henan Regional Chinese Cuisine, Lion Dance, Mulan at the Henan Opera, singing, dancing, kung fu performance and up to $1,000 raffle draw. Click here for details.
